Embed This Image On Your Site: Add image code below.Q: MySQL `GROUP BY` taking far too long to execute I am currently building a simple MySQL database to perform a search and replace on a bunch of text documents. I am using MyISAM, and trying to perform a simple SELECT * GROUP BY something. From what I understand, this should be extremely fast, but my server is saying otherwise. The resulting query is quite large, but a trimmed version is: SELECT `document`.*, RIGHT( `document`.`html`, LENGTH( SUBSTRING( `document`.`html`, `document`.`search_for`, LENGTH( `document`.`replace_with`) ) ) ) AS `new_html` FROM `document` WHERE `document`.`html` LIKE '%something%' GROUP BY `document`.`id` ORDER BY `new_html` ASC The database is quite small, with 7 million rows and 400 columns. The problem is that the query takes 12 minutes to execute, and I've tried replacing SELECT * with a more succinct query like SELECT document.* FROM document, but that seems to make no difference. The result set has 100 columns, and 5 million rows, and the database is using around 20% of the memory. I'm sure this is a simple mistake that I'm making somewhere, but I'm fairly new to MySQL and can't work it out. Any help is much appreciated. EDIT: I'm running mysql version 5.1.30, and PHP version 5.3.3. I'm actually calling this as a string from PHP, but I do have the variables available
